It was with great sadness that I learned of Dr. Reinke's passing. I knew him as Mark as I was his roomate when he attended UND. My name is Scott Karnik. Mark was terrific. He always had a smile on his face and always enjoyed telling a joke or saying something (anything) to make us laugh.
I think the best memory I have of him was the last time I saw him alive. That was all the way back to 1982. I had returned from military service and was attending UND to take some courses before returning to the work world. One day I received a phone call and lo and behold it was Mark! He'd found my name in the student directory and called. He was an Air Force pilot at the Grand Forks Air Force Base, flying tankers(?) I think. I could be wrong. Mark said he enjoyed it but he'd found another love, even greater than flying. It was working as an EMT. He told me he did that in Fargo and it was incredible. He also said he was planning to get out of the Air Force and try get into med school, based on his experience with the FM Ambulance Service. My head whirled because Mark had an Air Force ROTC scholarship and was working very hard to insure a "slot" in flight school. That was everything to him. But sometimes God has other plans for us and He introduces us to "other loves" besides the ones we think we want. God certainly did that with Mark and I was very happy to read on his obituary that he got into med school and became a terrific doctor. God gave Mark another love and he ran with it. Good for him.
Please accept my condolences. Be assured that I pray for the repose of Mark's soul daily. I miss him. I miss the fact that he's not on this earth anymore and that I'll not be able to have contact with him. That's why I'd googled his name and discovered he'd passed away on Christmas Day, 2013. It was sad news. But it's also good news because Mark's not suffering anymore and he's in a great place, looking down on all of us, and smiling, of course.
Rest in peace Mark. And if you have a chance, please say a prayer for me. Thank you for being a friend.
