Obituary for Vernon James "Mope" Silbernagel

Vernon James "Mope"  Silbernagel
Vernon (Mope) Silbernagel, 89, De Pere, passed away Monday morning, December 11, 2017, at his residence. The son of the late Joseph and Mamie (Hauch) Silbernagel was born May 11, 1928. He was a graduate of St. Francis Grade School and East De Pere High School. Vernon served his country in the Korean Conflict and was a Medic in the U.S. Army serving in Germany. On October 14, 1967, he married Rita Skodinski at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, in Langlade. Mope was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in De Pere. He loved to go bowling and golf. He played baseball and softball during his early years in life. He enjoyed walking in the mall daily, where he met many friends. Mope worked for Cuene Buick as a manager of the Body Shop for 40 years.
Survivors include his son Joe (Tara), De Pere; niece, Leah (Rick) Squires, Colorado; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ray (Rogene) Skodinski, Seymour; Leonard (Dorothy) Skodinski, Brown Deer; nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita on September 13, 2013; sibilings: Norman (Dolores) Silbernagel; Lucella Silbernagel; Dolores (Andy) Olson; Rita’s family: Josephine (Walter) Kriewaldt; Bernice Skodinski; Donald (Jeanette) Skodinski; Lenore (Mike) Pomasl; Sylvester Bumann.
Family and friends may visit at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 220 S. Michigan St, De Pere on Saturday, December 16, from 8:30am until 10:45am. Mass of Christian Burial for Mope will be celebrated at 11:00am with Rev. Richard Getchel officiating, with full Military honors to follow at the church. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, De Pere. Cotter Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cotterfuneralhome.com.
